    Chs. 13-14
Its amazing to see how they had to beg for gas and sell everything they had just to get a gallon. Especially if gas was as cheap as it was back than. the other thing thats crazy is that grandpa died of a stroke. speaking of stroke i always wondered why its called a stroke. stroke to me meant that you were kick starting an engine, but in human circumstances its key word for a heart attack. its sad that pa died and its still sad that everything there working for is just a gambling game to whether they make money and find a nice farm or not.

"the Citadel of the family" (100) this quote represents the shape of ma's body we traced brandon because he is the biggest of us all, and not because ma was fat and big boned but because she held such a strong position in her family...
"her tone made ashmed" (139) we did the mouth so disticntly to draw more attention then the rest of the things because based on how ma took things other people reaccted to her in that manner, if ma was not happy about something everyone knew it, this was important because it showed how much her opinon had mattered in the family....

    ...
"Joad was grinning at him, but Joads eyes were sharp and interested too."
I think what he means here is you can smile but your eyes tell it different. "Sharp" I am guessing means there is a little glare behind them, and "interested" may mean he's interested in what Casey (or whoever he's talking) is saying.
    {5.jpeg}
    1. Red outline- We outlined him in red because we believe that Tom Joad is always wearing his anger instead of his heart on his sleeve.
    "I'd do what I done again." (35)
    2. Mom Tattoo- He loves his mom. I really think he cares quite a bit for her and he definitely respects her.
"Look, Ma, stop your worryin'." (123)
"Tom watched her working, and his eyes smiled." (124)
    3. His lips- He doesn't like to stir up anything and also I think he doesn't like to really speak his mind. Maybe he doesn't like to be honest sometimes? "His upper lip was long, teeth protruded, lips stretch to cover them, this man kept his lips closed." (9)
    4. Callused hands- Works hard and is used to working a lot.
"His hands were hard, broad fingers and nails thick and ridged as little clam shells. The space between thumb and forefinger and the hams of his hands were shiny with callus." (9)
    5. Muddy shoes- He's been through a lot throughout his life some of it bad, where he was stuck in a situation.
    6. Cheap clothes- We put that he was wearing a pair of pants that are so cheap holes have been ripped through the knees. "The man's clothes were new -- all of them, cheap and new."

    7. His coat- We drew his coat kinda big for him because we thought he is too tall and too skinny. Just like Ethan said a "beanpole".
"The coat was too big, the trousers too short, for he was a tall man."
"The coat shoulder peaks hung down on his arms, and even then the sleeves were too short and the front of the coat flapped loosely over his stomach." (9)
Some More To Go With Numberrr #3!!
"Tryin' to get along. That's all." (171)
"You got a right to say if you wan' neighbors or not." (83)
"They give you hell if you raise hell." (73)

"the Citadel of the family" (100) this quote represents the shape of ma's body we traced brandon because he is the biggest of us all, and not because ma was fat and big boned but because she held such a strong position in her family...
"her tone made ashmed" (139) we did the mouth so disticntly to draw more attention then the rest of the things because based on how ma took things other people reaccted to her in that manner, if ma was not happy about something everyone knew it, this was important because it showed how much her opinon had mattered in the family....
"Smell of meat and green beans came out.." (140" we put noodles on her head becuase no matter what or how hard things were going ma had always made it a matter to be worrying about food and how her family was going to be taken care of....
"ma folded her hands over her stomach" (109)
this quoted goes along with the roseary because we feel as if ma was passionitate about god, and had really wanted jim casy to pry for them along with grandma, we think that ma had a god judgement on where she stood with god, an also had an affect on the plot that way with jim casy.
"the remembered cool, calm, drawl, friendly and humble. " (99) this quote half way goes along with the dress, it is camo and has light spots and also dark spots. this shows how ma is, she is super nice cool calm friendly humble sometimes but other times she is straight direct to the point and just plain mean when she wants to be, like when she had threatened the family with the iron rod.
"Ma reached a hand from under the blanket and snapped it" this is an example where ma is showing her mean side again.
"it aint pa" (577) this quote symbolizes her eyes because they are like magnifying glasses. this quotes is that ma is trying to keep everyone confident and together and it was not pa who was taking charge. ma is the leader.
"why i feel like people again" (420) this quote also represents the eyes becuase ma is always trying to look up and beyond for bigger and better things for her faimly, when she said this she is happy because she is starting to be treated like a human again and not a dog!!! another quote to go along with this would be
"Maybe we can get one of them little white houses"(124) this shows that ma is seeking looking so hard and believing that there will be hope for them in cali. she is alsoing looking fo rhte postives and thiks that this wil change their lives.
"Mothers voice, the remembered cool, calm, drawl, friendly and humble(99). We used a small mouth because a mouth like that resembles what this quote is saying.
"Let em come" she said "we got plenty"... Since she's always ok with sharing and thinking about food we used a wraper on the bacck of her head to represent the times she's thinking about food and ok with sharing.
"Ma was heavy but not fat; thick with child bearing (99). We did the cut out on the carboard because its thicker than paper and because cardboard can resist more like this quote says.
"Her strong broad bare feet" (99). We used Brandon to guide our cut out because he's the strongest of our group and Ma is really strong...
Ma was always thanking god and always being all way religous. So we put a rosary around her hand that represented that.. and a quote that goes with it is, "Ooh thank god!" "Thank god!" (101)
Her face hardened and her eyes grew cold (104). On our cut out we made Ma's eyes magnifined glasses because they represent cold and always looking deeper into everything.
Ma got her heart set on a white hous (278). From this sentence we see that Ma is thinking about having a better life and keeping her family close to her in her white house. So on our cut out we used a picture of a family and put it on as her heart because she's always looking out for her family and making sure they all have what they need.
Ma embraced Ruthie's shoulders in a quick convulsive hug and then released her. With this quote we see that Ma really cares and loves and supports her family. To represent this we put a sports bra on the cut out to help show that Ma was a supporter of the whole family.
"dont go near your father he might whale you if you do"this ties into the heart with the family picture because she is thinking about her family.
"wouldn it be nice if the menfolks could get some work" this ties into the sports bra because not only dose she support her family she is also looking out for other people.
"wouldn it be nice if the menfolk could get some work" the white parts of the dress because she is being nice and looking out for other people.
ma made a grumpy little low and said "please to meet ya" this represents the dark parts of the dress because she can be kinda grumpy and mean sometimes but nice at other times.
"but they aint stealin nothin" this is also for the family picture in the heart because she is looking out for them.
"An ma aint no body you can push around" the rosery because she stands up for what she bleives in and wont let that change.
"maybe ma would sit back and let rose of sharon do some of the work" the sports bra because she likes to be the main support of the family
"You won't be no burdin. Each"ll help each, an we"ll all git to California" (202) this represents her heart with the family pic in it Because it's showing How her family matters to her by sticking together.
"If she was anywhere the gate would be closed and hooked" (56) this represents her being responsible Because she never let her gate open.
"Tommy, don't you go fightin' em alone, they'll hunt you down like a coyote". (104) this represents her heart also because she doesn't want her son to go fight as an individual but as a team.
"Let em come" she said "we got plenty" (99) this represents her brain Because not only is she thinking How she is going to feed her family but she is willing to share with everyone.
"Watch the look in his eyes" (127) this represents her concern for her family because she doesn't know what he is going to do Because he looks haptized.
"well, we ain't none of us jumpin' for fun" she said."You he's keep watchin' the pots" (194) this represents the care for Rose of Sharon Because Rose of Sharon is scared and Ma told her an old saying about a Chile born outa sorrow"ll be a happy Chile. Ma told her not to be scared and to settle down basically.

    TOM JOAD CHARACTERRRRRR
Our cutout of Tom Joad had a lot of symobolism.
    1. His hair is blue because he is a cool headed man. In the begining of the story he seems like a calm man. He never got mad at anyone for no reason.
    2. His eyes have Crows feet because he squints and the book also said "he looked old for his age". His crows feet could also mean that the crows fly over dead things and there were crows flying over both grandma and pa.
    3. Another thing about his eyes is the color of them. we decided to color them purple because he's mystirious. when he was talking to casy i couldnt tell if he liked him or not.
    4. His eyebrows are slightly raised for the same reason.
    5. His tie is colorful and a little bit smaller because he has a small sence of humor.
